Verdict to be handed down in the case of Gojko Janković

Pronouncement of the Trial Panel’s verdict in the case of Gojko Janković has been scheduled for Friday, 16 February 2007 in courtroom 6, starting at 11.00am. The Accused is charged with Crimes against humanity.

The Court confirmed / accepted an amended indictment against the Accused on 20 February 2006.  This indictment alleges that, between April 1992 and February 1993, as a leader of a paramilitary group, Gojko Janković took part in a large-scale and systematic attack on the non-Serb population in the Foča municipality region. He allegedly also took part in the imprisonment, killing and sexual abuse of non-Serbs. The indictment inter alia alleges that on 3 July 1992 the Accused was in command of a group of approximately 20 soldiers who allegedly attacked Bosniak civilians hiding on the hill of Kremenik.  It is alleged that in this attack some of the civilians were killed, and that following the attack seven civilians were imprisoned, brutally beaten and eventually executed. 

On July 4 2006, the Court confirmed an additional indictment against Gojko Janković.  This indictment alleges that, in the period between April 1992 and February 1993, acting as a paramilitary group leader, Gojko Janković participated in the rape of a Bosniak civilian woman in the area of Foča.  The Court conducted joint proceedings under the two indictments.

 

This was the second case referred to the authorities of BiH by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).  Until today, 5 cases involving 9 Accused have been transferred to the Court of BiH. 

The trial panel has held a total of 26 hearings lasting over 103 hours in the course of this trial.
